More on giving

So the boys finally chose the charities they want to donate to this year. As I mentioned previously, we had received mailings from tons of charities asking for donations, and I spread them all out, described each one and what it does, and stood back and let them choose.

Ds#2 chose Monroe County Humane Association, and Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County.
Ds#1 choose American Humanist Association and American Bird Conservancy.

Since neither of them chose the ones I wanted, I've also picked some for my own extra gifting for the holidays:
The Shalom Community Center
America's Second Harvest
Southern Poverty Law Center
Heifer International

And speaking of giving, now that we sort of have our business up and going, we will be writing into the business plan (make that: ds#1 will be learning how to write a biz plan with me) to donate a portion of our profits to charities. First we have to figure out whether we're actually making a profit, and then figure out how much to give. *grin* Any advice from seasoned business folks out there would be greatly appreciated!

You're such a great mom. I'm so impressed: philathrophy and buisness plans? You're my kind of woman!

See if this helps:

Otherwise, there's a lot of helpful templates online. Just search for buisness plan templates.

Wonderful that you are donating! So many charities are in need, especially this year. Your kids have a wonderful role model in you.

I love the fact that you let the kids pick which charities to give to. Cody has to put aside a portion of his allowance every week for charity. We wanted to get him in the habit while he was young :)

Good luck with the business!

I think it's great that you involve your boys in donating and it's great that you donate as well!! I donate every month to both the Humane Society of the U.S. and the ASPCA.

You ROCK girl! What a wonderful way to teach your kids. I am going to follow your example.

Each year, we give to Toys for Tots and I really wanted to teach the kids that there are so many MORE needs in this world. What a beautiful way to show them. Letting them choose gives them more pride and ownership.

You are awesome!
P.S. I agree with Navita - the tree looks great.

You guys are all so sweet, but I'll bet we're no more generous than any of you (I just happen to post our stuff)! ;) I've always believed that you get what you give - absolutely no scientific proof of good karma, but it seems to work nonetheless for us.

Blonde Duck, thank you for the link! I'll check it out. So many things to learn, and my brain is already full (or at least the part of it that's not on vacation). ;)

Such an awesome idea, I've talked with my kids about doing a project for the food shelf and they seem all for it...but I never thought about letting them pick a charity and donating to it...I'll have to run it past them and see what they think...I just hope they realize that I dont have $5000 to give...thats what Zephryn wanted me to give to the food shelf...silly boy :-P

Stace, doesn't everyone have 5 grand just sitting around, begging to be donated?? LOL!

It's wonderful that you guys have gotten the boys to donate part of their money to worthwhile causes. If only there are more parents out there who'd teach their kids good skills like that, the world would be a much happier place for it.

(BTW, don't feel you have to respond to my babblings cuz as you know, it takes me forever to catch up on your blogs).
