All hail the Queen!

The Soap Queen, that is (a.k.a. Anne-Marie Faiola)!

I had to interrupt my self-imposed exile from Blogland to give the Soap Queen a shout-out for the lovely gift she sent. This is what arrived via FedEx yesterday:Talk about cute and great smelling soaps! These are soaps that Anne-Marie made during the taping of her new YouTube educational videos on the art and craft of soap-making. I can't begin to tell you how excited I am about these videos. I bought DVDs from Brambleberry on how to make cold-process and melt-and-pour soaps and have learned so much from Anne-Marie (who has a great video presense and is a wonderful teacher). The YouTube videos will be so helpful in supplementing my education.

This is her schedule (click on image to enlarge); check it out!On a tangential note, I have a few things made (and nearly made) for some of the participatns in the "First Responders/Pay-It-Forward" giveaway/swap. I'm excited and will be dropping by the recipients' blogs within the next week or two to ask for your snail-mail addresses!

Lovely day

It is spring-like today! Made for a lovely drive to ceramics. It's spring-like inside the house too: all our citrus trees (orange, lemon and lime) are blooming! The blossoms make the entire downstairs smell wonderful.

Red-headed woodpeckers have been coming close to the house too. My camera can't zoom close enough, but this is a close up of image I took (hence the fuzzy and grainy-ness of it). They are spectacular birds, so vibrantly colored.Today, I'm reading these blogs and then I think I'll take a break for a while...books to read, worlds to conquer, and all that. :)

Thankful Thursday

I'm very thankful for

1) living in a college town where there are always free academic lectures to take the kids to - for example, this very entertaining talk we went to last Saturday:
2) our terrific public library (which is ranked #2 in the country, apparently). It has a beautiful, open space, friendly staff, and it is very generous with buying patron requested materials. They bought all of the books/DVDs I have requested over the past several years! And because of their incredible number of offerings, I, once again, borrowed too many books yesterday. They're wonderful books: Physics of Star Trek, and Quintessence (both by the author in the above photo), In the Sweet Kitchen, and Scream-free Parenting, among a few others. I'd really love to read them all, and therefore think I need to stay off the computer for a few weeks in order to get my reading (and crafting and baking) in. :)

It's hard to give up blog reading, so I was thinking maybe I should just tackle 5-10 per day. Which ones I read will be determined by whether there's a new post and also going in order of appearance in my "follow" list...so, pretty random, and therefore, please don't feel slighted if I don't get to yours on a given day.

Today, I've read, or am going to read (when the satellite internet connection is actually working):
The Lisa Yee Blog
Gassner Custom Soap
Mud Puddle Girl
an open [sketch]book
Get In, Hang On
The Good Enough Witch
Indie Business Blog

Rake Shovel Hoe
A Duck in Her Pond
Oikology 101
Let Me Think On It
Health Begins at Home
Family Forever
Soap and the Finer Things in Life

Professional SAHM

Oops, exceeded my quota of 5-10 blogs to read...

Anyway, hope you all have something to be thankful for today! :)

Random Tuesday Facts

It's been a lovely at-home day. I had planned on taking the kids to a couple of academic talks, but opted to give them, and me, a rest from running around, and, instead, stay home to enjoy the lovely daffodils.Perhaps I can even work on my sweater, which is progressing (although as soon as I finish it, it'll be summer weather).
Anyway, I had grand plans to type a long post today. In fact, I had already hand-written it, but then I saw the following article, which will also serve as my random fact of the day. So instead of typing in the long post, I'm going to make soap and then play board games with my sweet boys. :)

Random Tuesday Facts + thanks!

Some little snippets of Tuesday facts for you today:

1) As my ds#1 likes to tell people: infinity is not a number; it's a mathematical concept.

2) If you've had a dry spell writing in your blog (oh yeah, that's me), here's some advice on how to prime that pump: How to Generate Great Content Week After Week by Write to Done

And my thanks? It goes to Joanna, Ms. Product Body herself! My order of Whipped Shea Butter (order now before the summer heat prevents their shipment!) arrived with extra goodies from Jo: a sample of Crush on You in Baked Bread scent (I have to keep reminding myself not to eat my bath and body products) and her ta-da!! totally perfected Creme Fresh! To say it's a delightful and emollient cream doesn't do it justice; you need to order one yourself and try it!

Ok, have to run again. Hope you are all having a nice start to the week! I was feeling a bit harried and grumpy this morning, but then I won a book from Algonquin Books - through Twitter, no less!, so that perked me right up. :)

To quote Phil Collins...

Uh oh, I missed again. The Thankful Thursday post, that is.

I am thankful for my very patient blogging friends who are awaiting some sign from me as to what my Pay-It-Forward giveaway/swap gift is for each of them.

Minka was the easiest to do as she requested something online (dear soul didn't want me to have to mail her anything overseas). So I've made something using my very basic Print Shop program (read: nothing fancy...how I wish I had Print Shop Pro!). But I could only save it in formats that Blogger doesn't upload.

So, Minka, if you want to email me (my email's on my Profile page), I can email you a PDF attachment of your gift. :)

Everyone else, I'm working on your gift...thank goodness I have a year to complete the task!

Happy weekend to all!

Vacation photos

Snazzy title, eh? Sorry I missed posting some random facts yesterday, but was busy shrinking and uploading photos for this particular post, and doing a huge amount of baking. Got rave reviews on my dairy-free pineapple right-side up cake today, as well as my cinnamon rolls, so it was worth it.

Before I show the photos, and you all fall asleep, I'd like to mention that my vacation was made a lot nicer by a few comforts of home. I brought along Carrie's Richly Almond hand cream, and it kept me hydrated in the dry, dry south. I also brought along Joanna's Road Wash (Champagne scent), which helped me feel like a million bucks in the shower every morning when I had to drag my sorry butt out of yet another motel. And then, I had Trisha's yummy Fresh Snow soap in my luggage to keep me smelling nice as I lived out of the suitcase for 2 weeks (I only wish I had remembered to do it for the boys who are pretty stinky these days).

So, on to the trip. We stopped in a number of places on our two week trip to the West Coast, many of which are in the South-West canyons area. One of the first major stops was at Colorado National Monument. This first photo is of a stop there called "Balanced Rock", and you can see why:The view from one of our hikes at CO National Monument:Next, we went to Arches National Park:As you can see, the weather was wonderful. In fact, it was so hot, we could wear shorts, and it was so sunny, I got sun-burnt on my hands (I put sunscreen all over myself except the back of my hands). After Arches, we hit Capitol Reef National Park, which turned out to be one of the best places we visited:And this was the magnificent view from our motel balcony at Capitol Reef:On our way out of Capitol Reef, we made an unplanned stop at Red Canyon; you can see why it's called that:Bryce Canyon (which is not technically a canyon) is one of the places dh and I have always wanted to go back to. There was still snow on the ground, and some steeper trails were too slick to traverse, but we did the Navajo Loop trail and it was a good hike. Ds#1 and I still have red mud on our shoes from that hike.Deep inside Navajo Loop trail:LEGOland...the highlight of the trip for the boys. It turned out to be a nice visit, even though we're not amusement park types. It's a more manageable size than Disneyland (which we won't go to for various reasons), and, besides, we've been a family of LEGO-lovers for decades now. Bionicles are ds#1's favorite LEGO products:My favorite part of LEGOland was Miniland. Dh claims I have a Godzilla complex and just want to stomp all over these little things, but I think it's more than that. I've always wanted a perfect dollhouse and this stuff just feeds that desire:Made a quick stop at Hoover Dam. We also hadn't really planned on this stop, but as there was a storm brewing, and we were trying to stall a bit to let the storm out-pace us, we decided to spend some time here. The sheer enormity of this contraption is mind-boggling, and I'm used to thinking about the sheer enormity of outer space:One of our last stops was at Petrified Forest (which had never been a forest, just like Bryce is not a canyon). Apparently, people steal one ton of rocks from there every month so that it no longer is as breathtaking as it once was. That's both sad and infuriating. We got a tour of some petroglyphs at Petrified Forest from a ranger:Well, that's all, folks. Those of you who are my Facebook friends have seen the other photos I've posted. :) Please e-mail me if you'd like to be my FB friend!

Since I haven't come up with my own post yet

Yup, I'm running behind, as usual.

Instead, I'll send you over to a couple of other places:

Professional SAHM - where Maureen has a terrific article called How the Economy is Affecting Today's Moms

and

Ladybug Soapworks - where she is holding a virtual "garage sale" since she is moving and needs to clear out some stock

p.s. (added 4/8/09) Gassner Custom Soaps is also having a sale: a soap mold sale!

Enjoy and happy Monday!

Burnt Mill Candles and Soaps floored me!!

...in a good way, of course!

When we got home today, there was a 10 pound (no kidding; I weighed it) package for me in mail box from Burnt Mill Candles and Soaps!! She had a giveaway last month, and I was the winner, but I never imagine I'd get 10 pounds of soaps! Holy cow!One of my favorite scents/colors of the lot:And because I'd mentioned in her blog that I'd never experienced the Pink Sugar scent before, she gave me a bottle of her fabulous Room/Body Spray!!Thank you so very much, Burnt Mill Candles and Soaps, for your generosity!!!

The only downside is: I have so much soap, I won't be able to buy any for a while. ;)
