Fraud and Sappiness

So it's finally happened: someone pilfered our credit card number and made a bunch of little charges on our card. AARP??? What the heck? Who steals someone's card number and charge an AARP membership on it?

Even though as a socially conscientious person, I can't love Bank of America, I was very impressed with the expediency of their noticing the fraudulent charges and notifying us.

To start off an otherwise lovely Monday morning - there's nothing like waking up to sunshine! - I'm sharing a song that's been running through my head for a few days. I want to qualify this by saying I am not normally a sappy person. I abhor chick flicks and love action/adventure/sci-fi movies and books. This song, though, brings me back to a very specific time and place: Europe, 1986. That was one of the best time I'd had on a trip, and every time I hear this song, it immediately transports me back. Hope you don't mind a little bit of sappiness today!

Once upon a time someone applied for and received a ccard in my husband's name. That was pretty fun to deal with... but AARP? That's interesting. Usually fraud goes the other way around.

Thanks for the sappy song. :-)

WELL! Where to begin? Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Peter Cetera? I didn't even know I knew him - if you see what I mean. I have never heard the song you liked but I now remember 'Glory of Love' and "If You Leave Me Now' which I didn't realise were him as I thought they were by 'Chicago'and I now find out he was in 'Chicago' and so it goes on....the cheesy videos, the terrible clothes, that 80's vibe...I am in MTV heaven (in the days when MTV just played music videos)
Thank you.

Oh Geez, Teresa! Some people won't stop at anything, will they? Shows how desperate some peeps can be. Glad your CC Company dealt with it swiftly.

And thanks for the walk down memory lane ~ LOVE that song! It was the year we were married, that's why it holds special meaning to me. :)

The same thing happened to us, and like a billion people with Capitol One. We canceled the card. Phishing scam.

Sorry to hear that about your card. I had the same thing happen, but they charged things to iPhone in amounts of $5 or less. Seriously, is that worth getting arrested? Gotta love the 80's clothes and hair!

Teresa - that's horrible! we had an ATM fiasco in NYC - $900 taken from our bank account. Thankfully the bank fixed it for us. Now we have a cap on our daily limit. Can they do that with credit cards?

Should have commented on the fraud too - oops. Got carried away by Peter Cetera (nooooo)

Had to Google AARP - American Association of Retired People? A silver surfer fraudster? Surely not! And won't it be easy to track down who used the card to pay for their membership?

It has happened to me twice - once £5000 disppeared (which I spotted!) and once a series of small train fares and bus fares were charged fraudulently and the bank spotted those. Good job I was reimbursed both times.

It is an incentive to check those bank statements.....

We had something similar happen to us a few years ago. I noticed a charge on my CC to an internet company I never heard of. I reported it and learned that these thieves randomly punch in numbers until they come up with one that works. It was scary to learn that they don't even need your actual CC to rip you off anymore :( This person was somewhere on the East Coast and we are in the Midwest.

I hope everything gets resolved quickly and easily for you and that your CC company refunds the amount stolen.

I'm on my way out the door but I'll listen to your song when I get home. I love Peter Cetera. Does he sing anymore? He was one of my fav's!

I adore Peter Cetera. So glad that you found out about those credit card charges before they got out of hand!

Yeah, I like that song, too.

And, yeah, I am NOT a BOA fan, but they have surely fixed a few not-our-fault issues pretty quickly. I still don't like them, though.

That's terrible ~ and I'm not surprised--just who are these people that do this?

Hi everyone! Thanks for your sympathies and also sharing your stories...yeah, misery loves company. ;) I'm sorry that it's happened to so many of you too.

Meg (Kiss My Style), I can check on the cap thing, although there have been times (like when we hit our favorite health-food co-op and buy airplane tickets on the same day) that we're glad we don't have a cap. :}

Good to know that most of you enjoyed my sappy trip down memory lane and weren't too traumatized by it. LOL!
