Tis the season, and weather, to crank the oven up to 450 degrees F and bake some bread!
Mmmm...chewy, sour-doughy, and it tastes really yummy with the Vegemite we got at Jungle Jim's. :)

Yum. I just made some pumpernickel the other day and what a treat! 'Tis the season, indeed! :)
There's no season that I don't crave carbs, it's just a matter of which form I consume it in.
Gorgeous looking bread, as always. So is vegemite as amazing as those Brits and Aussies claim it to be?
mmmm baked bread!
When I was little and we had a snow day from school we would always make cinnamon rolls from scratch. Was always fun!
Vegemite, hmmmm....Not sure I can agree with that one. Homemade bread though, yum!
That kooks and sounds like a very yummy bread. I (being lazy) make the 'No-Knead bread' recipe from the NYTimes. Yours sounds very similar in being chewy and sour doughy - recipe please?
mmm...I can almost smell it! I love sourdough bread!!Jungle Jim's looks like a interesting place to get some really great stuff...perhaps just a little tacky. :)
It looks delicious as always!! Did you have other stops tied in on your way to Cinci? I'm glad JJ's had a good selection! I made some french rolls last week that were crusty on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I do love this time of year for baking!
Vegemite??? Is that a dip?
Your bread looks delicious!
Amber, I've not tried pumpernickel before - do you eat it just with butter, or do you make a special sandwich with it?
Epi, you crave pork fuzz too...LOL! I've always liked Vegemite; a little goes a long way though.
Misty, what a great tradition you had! :)
Maureen, it's really tasty if you crave salty stuff. LOL!
Diane, actually, this IS a no-knead artisan bread! But I use the one from the Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day book, not the one from NYT, which, I believe is Mark Bittman's recipe? I hear that one works well too.
Alli, Jungle Jim was extremely tacky! LOL! And the loud pirate-themed advertisements they pipe into the store is so annoying. Sensory overload, really.
Grace, we should have planned for other stops in Cinci, I guess, but with the dermatologist appointments in the morning, it was close to noon when we left here, and if we had paired it with another stop, we wouldn't have been home until really late. Next time though, we should just plan to go on a free day and maybe stop in IKEA or something too. ;) Mmm, what recipe did you use for the French rolls?
Michelle, oops, our comments crossed paths! Vegemite is a Australian spread much like what peanut butter is to us, I guess (without pb's versatility). Here's Wiki's description: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegemite
I thought cuz it was a long drive that you probably tied the trip in with some errand you had. IKEA is always fun! And the recipe I used was from allrecipes.com and it is called French Break Rolls to Die For.
oops sorry! right finger on the wrong hand.
Yes, I use the Mark Bittman/Jim Lahey recipe - it's delicious, must check out yours...
I only crave pork fuzz when I see it. Outta sight, outta mind. Squirrel!
Yum, yum, yum!! I sooo miss sourdough bread!
Grace, yeah, normally it'd make sense to pair the trip with something else, but dh was itching to go and our schedule had been so packed that it was the first day we could take off early enough. I'll look into the French bread recipe, thanks!
Diane, I have that recipe printed out and tucked into my Artisan Bread book!
Epi, mmmmmm, pork fuzz.....
Firely, I'm sorry to tempt you, hon! Just remember you're feeling much better now. :)
Homemade bread---delish!!!!!
This makes me want to make bread this week. Hey, I like the fall colors.
