Secret garden?

Hubby went out this afternoon - between periods of thunderstorms; boy, are we ever having crazy weather! - and picked a huge bag of kale!
I'm looking at it thinking "where the heck did this come from when last I looked at the garden, all our seedlings were under 3 inches tall??"

But here's this amazing kale, with leaves as big as my hand:
Yet the stems were tender:
Does hubby have a secret garden I didn't know about?  As it turned out, this was kale that self-seeded in the greenhouse and had grown up over the winter months.  I was in the greenhouse watering the seedlings last week when dh was at a conference, and I didn't even see the kale.  They don't call me Sherlock for nuthin'!  D'oh.

Hubby also picked the cilantro that had self-seeded in the greenhouse:
And we had both for dinner...wilted kale in an Asian marinade and a cilantro sauce for our home-made wontons.  Yum!

This looks delicious! And I wouldn't have noticed the kale in the greenhouse either. My observation skills are a little, uh, weak. Have you tried kale chips? I've got some in the fridge and I think I'm going to try those.

Kris, I'm so glad to hear that you're not observant either...LOL! I've not tried kale chips yet, although sometimes when hubby roasts broccoli and does the broccoli leaves with the florets, the broccoli leaves are like chips. :)

Misty, yeah, it was so nice to have veggies to harvest this time of year!

Sherrie, LOL! Dinner tonight will be smoked salmon pasta as we've pretty much finished that meal from yesterday. But you are welcomed to come over!

I always thought kale was one of those things they planted in planter boxes to have some greenery and colour over the winter months. ;)

Yum! We've never tried kale. I love greens so that might be a good one to try in the coldframe next year. It's a cool weather green, like spinach and lettuce, right?

Epi, yeah, ornamental kale is pretty popular...and it's actually edible. We grow the edible kind, which are tastier. ;)

Robin, yup! Kale is a cool weather crop. They, like cabbage, do especially well in the fall when the cooling temps make them sweeter. Definitely try them in the coldframe...they might go all winter for you in there!

I really wish we could grow food, but cactus barely grows here!

I'll bet they do grow all winter. We had arugula all winter...

Now that's the kind of planting I'm into...the self-seeding kind. Dinner looks delicious!

Duckie, maybe you should try container planting?

Robin, I hope you'll have much success with the kale, then! It's so good for you, and so tasty.

Suzanne, I know! The best kind of veggies are definitely those that pretty much take complete care of themselves, including propagating. LOL!

I just bought some kale today! It's not as pretty as yours though.

Love your garden pictures!! Especially the one of your rooster.

a guy asked us if the blue/green eggs at our store were naturally colored or not. lol... we set him straight.

Grace. soon you'll be able to grow your own kale! =) Did you also tell that guy that you don't need a rooster for a hen to lay eggs? LOL!

Yay, Duckie! Hope it's useful to you. :)

Wonderful! Well, except the cilantro. I am a bit allergic to the stuff. ;)

It actually inspired me to host a writing contest on my blog! I'll announce it next week!

Amber, I'd be absolutely heartbroken if I were allergic to cilantro! It's my fav herb.

Duckie, ooooh, I can't wait to see your contest!

Yum! That sounds so delicious. I probably shouldn't be reading your blog while trapped in a hotel room and feeling hungry with no good food to snack on! Ha, ha! :o)

Beautiful--and so good for you too.

I'm soaking in rain in Ohio too.

TeresaR said...

Holly, sorry to make you hungry...LOL!

Thanks, Squid! You get the weather system right after we do. We're having sun right now, so it's coming your way!
