But before the pie...

I want to show you the terrific things I'm using; I promise it won't be TMI!

I've been getting Product Body's Crush on You subscription, and have to rave about it. Joanna's scents have been outstanding, and Crush is the thing to use if your hands always dry out when you wash them. Crush is the only soap product that moisturizes my hands as I wash. It's much more than just a soap; it's a yummy scrub too.  This is the current "flavor" (pardon my lousy photo) -
And continuing on the fabulous products theme, Under the Willow has re-opened shop! Carrie makes fabulous soaps, laundry soaps, creams, and lip balms with delightful scents that remind me of home: cozy, comfy, and inviting.  This is what I got in the mail yesterday - not shown is the Twilight Sky scent laundry soap, which I had already put away and used 3 times today:
My only concern is that when I have the Cupcake lotion on, I may want to keep licking my hands, like a cat...LOL!

I sure know some talented ladies!

Under the Willow Wonders!

I adore all my talented soaping friends and they all have a product or two that I love, so I make my rounds when buying soaps so that I can give them all some business and get my fix of my favorites at the same time.

One of my dearest soaping friends is, of course, Carrie (Under the Willow, and Mud Puddle Girl), the lovely proprietress of Under the Willow Gifts! I bought some soaps from her (including her best-selling Cambridge Rum), and she included extra goodies of: delectable Decadent Body Lotion in Whispering Satin (which smells like a glamorous, nostalgic perfume), and a jar of laundry detergent in Lavender Grace.

I love the sweet little bags that Carrie's soaps come in, and especially want to draw your attention to the uber adorable embroidered leaves on the bag to the left: But what I want to rave the most about is her laundry detergent! OMG...it is a wonderful laundry detergent! Now, some of you may remember I made my own laundry detergent not too long ago. It works quite well, but the fragrance just doesn't seem to carry over. Carrie's detergent not only cleans beautifully, but the Lavender Grace scent actually lingers much better than mine. And, oh, what a scent it is! If you dry in a dryer, the fragrance does seem to dissipate, but if you line dry, the scent stays (a bit better on the synthetic fabrics than on the cottons). Carrie includes a cute little scoop and has instructions on the tag for both HE and top-loading machines. I highly recommend buying some of this laundry powder to try it for yourself! You will thank me for recommending it to you! =)

Reconsidered...

The idea seemed good, but in practice, it wasn't as much so.  So, we won't be on Artfire or Etsy afterall.  I'll continue to post our creations here.  It's good for our homeschool records, if nothing else. :)

Burnt Mill Candles and Soaps floored me!!

...in a good way, of course!

When we got home today, there was a 10 pound (no kidding; I weighed it) package for me in mail box from Burnt Mill Candles and Soaps!! She had a giveaway last month, and I was the winner, but I never imagine I'd get 10 pounds of soaps! Holy cow!One of my favorite scents/colors of the lot:And because I'd mentioned in her blog that I'd never experienced the Pink Sugar scent before, she gave me a bottle of her fabulous Room/Body Spray!!Thank you so very much, Burnt Mill Candles and Soaps, for your generosity!!!

The only downside is: I have so much soap, I won't be able to buy any for a while. ;)

Suds to Love made me hurt my jaw

That got your attention, didn't it? Hah! But, really, Trisha of Suds to Love did make me hurt my jaw, and I'll tell you why. ;)

Trisha posted a giveaway (I try never to miss a giveaway from my soaper friends because they are the best giveaways on the Web...truly!) of which I was the winner!

I got the box in the mail a couple of days ago; I opened it expecting a couple of bars of soaps and maybe a couple of other bath and body products that Trisha makes. Instead I peer in and I see this:A box jam-packed full of these delectable goodies!! That was when my jaw hit the ground...ouch! snort!

WOW!!! Check it all out:There were:
Orange Mocha Foamy Soap
Orange Mocha Lotion Bar
Orange Mocha Foaming Sugar Scrub
2 Lip Balms: Cherry Vanilla and Ginger PeachA Bubbly Bath Bomb in French Croquembouche (which I'm going to use tomorrow in a luxurious bath)
4 Valentine Soaps in Tropical Mango, Tropical Fruit, Strawberries & Cream, and Limeand a managerie of cold-process soaps:
Green Pineapple
Wise Men
Sweet Lavender Lemon Martini
Peppermint Cocoa
Orange Mocha
Fresh Snow
Winter Wonderland
Auld Lang Syne
and TWO Crantini - Trisha remembered that my sister (the lush) and I love Crantinis, so the sweetheart sent two so that I can give one to my sister without having to share my own!

In addition to hurting my jaw, Trisha is also making me not want to be environmentally conscious because now I want to take a shower four times a day just to try all the soaps! Just teasing you, Trisha...LOL!...because you are an absolute love!! I can't thank you enough for this package!!

Incredible cookies, more ceramic art, etc.

Well, I'm back...didja miss me? Right, in my dreams. ;)

Yesterday, after doing ceramics in the morning, I made the Coconut-Cranberry Chews that Abby posted a recipe for (sorry, her blog is private, so I can't link you there). They turned out every bit as amazing as she said they were.

I made a few adjustments to suit what I had on hand. Instead of flaked coconut, I only had shredded, so I used that. I didn't have the kind of dried cranberries that I'm sure the recipe's originator was thinking of, but I had to use up some Just Fruits dried cranberries. They come as whole berries, so I had to chop them up: First I creamed the butter, sugar, vanilla, etc:Speaking of vanilla, I thought of my friend, S, as I put in one or two more teaspoons of vanilla than the recipe asks for. I never measure out vanilla. I free-hand it generously because I love vanilla so much. Here's the dough, all ready to go, creeping up the sides of my trusty, much-loved, KitchenAid mixer:The recipe says to butter the cookie sheet, but you know what? If you have one of these babies, you'll never need to butter another cookie sheet again:The brand is:and I got mine courtesy of dh's wonderful, wonderful Aunt Lee! She gave me one, and then when her sister moved into a retirement home, her oven was too small for those, and Aunt Rosemary gave me a couple more. Score!!

Here are the cookies, all done. I am not kidding you when I say that these are some of the best cookies I've ever had.So, back to ceramics. We got some more stuff done - some stunning leaf plates and a few ceramic beads.

Here is ds#1's hickory leaf plate:And ds#2's poke leaf plate:And finally, my sycamore leaf plate:They turned out really beautifully, and I think that over the holidays when I have some free time (yeah, I'm an optimist), I should set up an Etsy shop.

Our ceramic beads, our first tries, turned out pretty well too. I'll have to decide which to make into jewelry and which to sell as plain beads. And speaking of Etsy, here are some goodies I got from some of my blogging/Etsy friends: Gassner Custom Soaps, Spotted Cow Soaps, Twin Birch Bath & Body/One Bubble at a Time blog, and Ladybug Soapworks. Not everything I bought, nor the extra goodies these lovely ladies have thrown in, are shown because I've already started using some of the stuff. :}As for my own gifting, I've made some stuff to give away...hope none of my neighbors are reading this blog. Well, this has been a long enough post to make you go cross-eyed, so I will bid you all a fond Thursday farewell.

Sweeeeet!

Life is usually pretty sweet, although I'm too grumpy or tired to notice it 70% of the time. Here are the latest examples of how sweet life can be...

1) Naming a special soap. Carrie at Under the Willow Gifts has a lovely Mud Puddle Girl theme, with faerie soaps to match. She had a naming contest for the fourth faerie soap, and I won with "Nurture Girl". Dear Carrie-Gigi sent me my very own Nurture Girl!!It has an incredible scent and is so feminine and pretty. You can find them at Carrie's Etsy shop, and Carrie's other amazing creations at her Under the Willow Shoppe!

2) Getting an award.. Michelle of the delightful Chocolate and Marmalade Tea blog bestowed a Kreativ Blogger award on me.The rules of the award are to list 6 fun things about me and then pass it along to 6 other deserving bloggers. I can't list just 6 because everyone who visits my blog is very creative. I think it's a prerequisite to being a blogger, really. And many of the visitors are not only creative bloggers, but also do other creative things on the side...sometimes tons of other stuff, like making books, soaps, knitted wear, great foods, fab art, etc. So, nope, can't name 6 people, but let it be known that I think you are all superbly creative. :)

As for 6 fun things about me...hmm, I'm not that fun of a person, so I'll just list 6 random things.

i) I used to love watching horror movies when I was about 7 to the chagrin of my cousins whom I used to spend weekends with.
ii) I was stuck in the It's a Small World ride at Disneyland when I was 19...for about 15 minutes, which is one of the reasons why I will not bring the kids to Disney anything.
iii) We almost named ds#1 "Chance" after a character on a show (Strange Luck, I think it was called) that spun off of The X-Files.
iv) I used to get sick several times a year when I was a child in Hong Kong, but as soon as we moved to Canada, I got sick only once or twice a year.
v) The only joke I can ever remember is one that I can't tell in polite company.
vi) Lately, when I'm lying down, it feels like I'm breathing in water...I think I should go see a doctor.

3) Soaps that even my kids like. Got a bar of the delectable Mocha Espresso Soap from the multi-talented Joanna (Product Body blog)! .Oh, baby! My younger son, who doesn't talk too much about his likes and dislikes, told me how much he liked this soap. Go and get one for yourself; you won't be disappointed

4) Soup is good food. Because Joanna mentioned tom kha gai soup in her Soap Bar blog, I got a hankering for it, and asked dh to make some for me, which he did today. It's actually tom kha, the vegan form:(In an ironic twist, after having our vegan and vegetarian (he also made potato leek) soups for lunch, we went out and culled a bunch of chickens.)

5) Ranking is not just for the military. There was some talk about page rankings on TwitterMoms, which got me really curious. I'd never bothered to check the rank of my blog before because I do it for fun. But, off I went to http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php and discovered I rated a 4 out of 10, which apparently is pretty darned good. Who knew? That's all for now, folks. I hope not to be back to blogging until I've caught up on NaNoWriMo again. I let myself play over the weekend (visiting my blogging friends, etc), and now I'm officially behind. Have a wonderful week, and don't forget about the Green Holiday Giveaway!

Kids at work

I thought I'd show a photo of Tadpole #1 working on soap making.

And lest you think the other Tadpole wasn't helping, he was...just not with soap.  He was "shelling" our homegrown popcorn:

To show the size of one of the little LEGO soaps (there are 3 of them in each package), here's a photo of the "real thing" and the soap together.  The one on the left is, obviously, the real brick, and the one on the right is the soap.

The successful swap!

I'm thrilled with my second swap, as I was with my first!! (My first was with Pica - I gave her the Patriotic Soaps, and she gave me walnut ink - which I used to enter an art exhibit at The Arthouse Co-op).See all the goodies I got for my second swap, with Elizabeth of Gracefruit?! I believe I asked for 3 bars of soap and a Wattle Balm, but she added another bar of soap, a Nail & Cuticle Stick (which I flaked out and forgot to put in the photo), AND, to my children's utter and absolute delight, a package of vanilla fudge...from Scotland!!

Elizabeth, I'm happy to report, received my handmade paper notecards last week and liked them as much as I liked her products!

Well, I want to go on and on about how beautifully her soaps are wrapped and how heavenly they smell, but having spent all morning doing ceramics, I now have to catch up on floors to vacuum and mop, hot dog buns to make, laundry to do, and a book (actually, about 20 of them) to read, so much run for now. Happy Wednesday to all!

Soap bags

And I am NOT referring to all the fine ladies who make soap...gack! Have I saved myself from a near faux-pas?

I'd mentioned that ds#1 wants to sell Halloween soaps that he's made, and I offered the option to bag them up in cute little Halloween motif fabric bags. Well, here they are:I got the fabric from a lovely Etsy gal, SweetSpice, and they were perfect for this project.

Edited to add: I could have sworn I had posted about ds#1 making Halloween soaps that he hoped to sell, but Heidi's comment made me double check and duh! I had never posted that here. Ok, here's a photo of the soaps:"Happiness depends upon ourselves." ~ Aristotle (384 BC - 322 BC)

Tagged and tickled

One little additional fact about soaps from my previous post: you know all the soaps I mentioned? Well, I have 3 times that sitting in my bathroom closet waiting to be used. Boy, me and my hoarding habits.

Julie of Cool Mom Guide tagged me today with the Six Wacky Things About Me meme. This actually ties in pretty nicely with Firefly Mom's Seven Wacky Things About Me tag, and also with Joanna's dare-to-reveal post.

Since the day was spent on ceramics, and baking buttermilk whole wheat bread, blueberry muffins, tomato pie, and making slip dumplings for chicken and dumplings, and we'll be gone all day tomorrow for the literary co-op and the boys' LEGO club, I don't have time to post more than 6 things about me.

Actually, I'm not even sure I can think of 6 things about me that I haven't already shared or that anyone would really want to know, but here goes:

1) My favorite apron says "designated deriver" and has "dy/dx" underneath, and that totally cracks me up because I am a serious nerd and a half.

2) I am really bad at remembering or recognizing faces, and have both not recognized someone I know, as well as mistaken a total stranger for someone I knew. And yet, my favorite type of art to do is portraiture.3) Neither my sister nor I ever wanted to have kids; my sister kept her word, I got talked into kids by dh.

4) I once field-dressed a rabbit in our front yard by having dh hold the how-to book in front of me while I was doing it. This was a rabbit that dh got with a sling shot (talk about amazing). Luckily, living out in the country, our "front yard" is about a couple of thousand feet from our nearest neighbor's house.

5) When I was about 4 or 5 years old, I used to have this dream a lot where I was in a castle with the full moon outside, and this spoon with medicine kept flying toward me.

6) I have had a crush on Mr. Spock of Star Trek (not Leonard Nimoy the actor) since I was 4 years old. (I think this is related to my nerd issue.)"Happiness depends upon ourselves." ~ Aristotle (384 BC - 322 BC)

Soaps, soaps, soaps, and some cookies

Sorry, no sage, deep thoughts this week, but I believe they have some on sale half-price at the local Super-Valu.

I was trying to rid the sweet potato sap from my hands after sous chefing yesterday (didn't know sweet potatoes had sap, did you?), and while scrubbing my hand for minutes on end, it occurred to me that we have a lot of really terrific soaps in the house. I once asked Joanna, who is a much bigger soap addict than I am, how she manages to use all the great soaps she gets, because I'd love to use them all as soon as I buy them, but I can only use so many at a time, and the rest sit patiently in my bathroom closet waiting to be the next chosen one.

So, what do I have going right now? Starting at my sink, I have Lemongrass Clay soap from Vintage Fresh Soaps and Shower Butter in Pamplemousse from Twin Birch Bath and Body (don't ask why I have shower butter next to my sink, but let me tell you, that stuff is fabulous!).

Moving next door into the full bath, and dh's sink, we have Birch Bark Soap's Plum Spice soap, Product Body Lab's Mocha Espresso soap, Product Body's Crush On You in Yuzu, Twin Birch Bath and Body's Pamplemousse soap, and a bar of I-forget-what soap (but it's very mild) by Savonara.

In the kitchen, I have Under the Willow Gift Shoppe's Bennington Maple Sugar soap. Next door in the laundry room, I have Twin Birch Bath and Body's Starry Night Foaming Hand Wash, and Savonara's Soapstone Hand Soap.

Downstairs, I have one of Birch Bark Soap's sample bars, which I can't remember the flavor of right now, and Gassner Customer Soaps' Organic Foamy Soap in Lemongrass.

Waiting in the wings is Spotted Cow Soaps' Fruit Tonic Whipped Soap for my facial cleansing.

It's officially cookies season again, at least in my house. I made one of the guys' favorite yesterday: gingerbread drop cookies. Here's the dough:And here are the cookies:Yummy!
